About Us

The Plant Based Foods Industry Association is a CEO-led body that will drive the plant-based industry forward in India. With sustainability and health as the key driving forces behind the activities of the association, the foremost aim of PBFIA is to make plant-based foods mainstream while providing new avenues for economic growth.

The Plant Based Foods Industry Association is led by Mr. Sanjay Sethi as Executive Director.

A winner of Chief Sustainability Officer of the Year and The Africa Food Prize Awards, Mr. Sethi has previously set up sustainable food businesses in India, Middle East, Eastern Europe, South Asia and in Africa over his 3-decade long career. He has been on the board of Sustainable Rice Platform, an initiative of UN Environment and International Rice Research Institute. He was also a steering committee member of Global Agribusiness Alliance of World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Geneva.

Mr. Sethi set up India’s first Mega Food Park and India’s first Free Trade Warehousing Zone. In his previous role as Director Sustainability at the $3 Billion Phoenix Commodities, Dubai, he accelerated the food commodities business towards more sustainable practices. Mr. Sethi was CEO Food and Beverages for an African MNC (Export Trading Group – ETG) and headed Jain Irrigation’s Africa Operations previously.

Mr Sethi is a graduate of Agriculture from CCS Haryana Agricultural University Hisar, MBA in Rural Management from IRMA and and he undertook Sustainability Leadership Course from Yale Business School in partnership with WBCSD.

PBFIA’S ROLE IN PROMOTING THE PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVE INDUSTRY

Our role as an association will encompass the following key actions to aid the growth plant-based sector in India.

  • PBFIA will create a network within the plant-based ecosystem to connect organisations, food handlers, start-ups, investors and consumers.
  • PBFIA will aid organisations to grow their businesses via required support, networking, collaboration, and dissemination of technical and market information and research.
  • At PBFIA, our primary drive is to highlight the benefits of the plant-based industry via its two key advantages- health and sustainability.
  • PBFIA will always stress on the bigger picture of securing a plant-forward future for its members in times of conflicts.
  • PBFIA has partnered with organisations with a similar philosophy and vision. We continue to collaborate with other industry bodies to further our goals. The association will work and operate on the principles of co-creation not competition.
  • PBFIA will also work towards the prevention of barriers from being erected against the plant-based industry by advocating for policy changes with the government. This will be done via dissemination of information and research on the multiple benefits of plant-based foods as a means to improve health, food security, fair practises and meet sustainable development goals.

PBFIA will also actively work with the media to promote plant-based food as a healthier lifestyle choice through credible research and appropriate endorsements.

At PBFIA, our aim is to contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals:

PROMOTING THE PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVE INDUSTRY

  • Create a network of suppliers, manufacturers and organisations to help accelerate the growth of the industry.
  • Facilitate and support research and technical development support through research labs, academia and commercial players with a view to expedite setting up of sustainable businesses, enhancing capabilities and building capacity of the industry.
  • Connect investors to possible opportunities in the area and companies
    with possible investors.
  • Explore potential business opportunities and help create networks of buyers, agents, suppliers and key government contacts in a specific country or region to help expand businesses.
  • Disseminate information regarding technology, domestic and international market trends, and opportunities to the members. Provide an umbrella for members at tradeshows, events.
  • Help build the human capacity of the industry.

PBFIA will also work towards the prevention of barriers from being erected against the plant-based industry by lobbying for incentives, pushing for fair labelling and classification rules, and lowering of tariffs with various government bodies. This will be done via dissemination of information and research on the multiple benefits of plant-based foods as a means to improve health, food security, fair practises and meet sustainable development goals.
